“In larger and traditional law firms, you are restricted in how you develop your practice because it has to be tied to your firm’s ethos. At Excello Law, you have the freedom to decide how you work.”

Steve Thomas - Commercial Litigation & Dispute Resolution, Insolvency & Corporate Recovery

“I work just as hard as I did in a traditional firm, but your time is your own”

Sarah King - Employment

Joining Excello was a leap of faith, but one I wish I’d taken much earlier. The freedom, the support and the ability to concentrate entirely on meaningful work have transformed the way I practise law.

Robin Gill - Corporate

Nigel has recruited other lawyers to join Excello Law and enjoys working within an informal team of highly-experienced corporate, employment and banking lawyers.

“I have known many of them for 20 years, we cross-refer business amongst ourselves.  It feels like a team within a firm, although we all choose to work how, when and where we want to.

“It was a very natural transition for me to work in an agile environment. I have always worked with many international businesses so don’t do a lot of face to face transactions.  I am used to working remotely and being directly responsible to my clients.  You have to be able to bring in your own work and deliver on all key aspects of service to your clients, although we also have the full resources of the central support team.

“I can’t imagine going back to a 9-5 firm.  After four years at Excello Law, even my wife has thanked George for the positive, life-changing opportunity.  We’re planning to go backpacking in India over Christmas because I know I have the cover in place with my colleagues.  I couldn’t have done that before.”

Common Questions About Becoming a Consultant Solicitor

Book a call

A consultant solicitor at Excello Law is a qualified solicitor who practises independently under Excello's SRA authorisation. You run your own client relationships and keep the majority of what you earn, without the overhead or hierarchy of a traditional firm.

Excello operates a dispersed model. There are no offices you're required to work from, no billable hour targets set by partners above you, and no equity structure to buy into. Solicitors join to build their practice on their own terms, with full support provided centrally.

An existing client base is not a formal requirement, but Excello is best suited to solicitors who have, or are actively building, their own following. The model rewards those who want to grow independently rather than those seeking a flow of referred work.

Yes, and it is built into the offer from day one. When you join, you meet with Excello's Marketing Director and Director of Refrrals, who work with you to build your profile both within the firm and externally. Regionally-based Business Development Ambassadors provide on-the-ground support, drawing on local contacts and knowledge to help newer consultants establish themselves. Regular practice-specific and regional meetings create further opportunities to connect, collaborate, and grow.

Referrals are a significant and active part of how Excello consultants develop their practices. Over 40% of matters opened at the firm are generated through internal referrals. Consultants connect via email groups and a dedicated intranet to find colleagues with the right expertise, collaborate on cases, and build teams for larger or more complex matters. It is a genuine network, not a passive directory.

Excello's consultants work across a wide range of practice areas including corporate, commercial, employment, real estate, family, and litigation. The firm is sector-agnostic and consultants join from private practice, in-house, and international backgrounds. Please note that Excello does not cover residential conveyancing.

Consultant solicitors set their own rates, invoice clients directly, and retain a high percentage of their fees. Excello takes a straightforward share to cover the support and regulatory infrastructure it provides. There are no unexpected deductions or lockstep arrangements.

Yes. Excello Law is authorised and regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority. Consultant solicitors practise under Excello's authorisation, which means clients have the same regulatory protections as they would at any regulated firm.

Yes. Excello regularly welcomes solicitors returning from in-house roles or international practice. If you hold a current practising certificate and are eligible to work in England and Wales, the firm will consider your application.

Excello works with experienced, senior solicitors and a minimum of eight years' post-qualification experience is required. The firm takes its community seriously and maintains a high standard for the lawyers it brings on board. As part of the process, we ask for professional references and an insurance questionnaire. This helps us ensure that everyone who joins is someone the wider Excello network and their clients can place real confidence in.

Yes. Excello has nine UK offices located in London, Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, Leeds, Nottingham, Chester, Leicester, and Stoke-on-Trent. The firm also has an international presence, with offices in Belfast, Dubai, and on both the Central Coast and North Coast of California.

You can register your interest through Excello's website. The process involves an introductory conversation with the firm to assess fit, followed by an onboarding process if both parties wish to proceed.
