Lessons from a Legal Entrepreneur
By George Bisnought, Founder of Excello Law
In the world of business, one lesson has become my guiding principle: you cannot stand still. No matter what industry you’re in, the moment you stop striving for greatness, you start falling behind. As the founder and CEO of Excello Law, and a ‘legal entrepreneur,’ I’ve learned that true growth arises outside comfort and familiarity. It comes from listening — not just to clients or market trends, but to those who are closest to the action, our lawyers. The real challenge is getting over your ego, staying open to feedback, and pushing forward.
At Excello Law, we’ve built something that’s different from the traditional legal model. We aren’t just a one-size-fits-all firm. We’re an environment that fosters flexibility, freedom, and empowerment for our lawyers. Our growth has been driven by continuously evolving — just because something worked yesterday doesn’t mean it will work today or tomorrow. This adaptability is key to staying ahead in a rapidly changing legal landscape.
- Listening Fuels Growth
To grow, you need to listen. For us, that means listening to the very people who make our firm what it is — our lawyers. They are the ones who understand their clients’ needs best, and they are the ones who know what tools and support they need to succeed. At Excello, we have always believed in giving our lawyers a voice, not just within the firm, but in how they choose to build their practices. When you genuinely listen, you understand where change is necessary, and you can adjust accordingly. This is how we’ve maintained our competitive edge, by constantly seeking input and adapting to it.
- You Can’t Let Ego Hold You Back
One of the toughest lessons I’ve learned as an entrepreneur is that ego can be the biggest barrier to progress. In the early days of Excello, I had to let go of the idea that I had all the answers. Building a business means surrounding yourself with the best people and being humble enough to take on their advice. The moment you think you’ve got it all figured out is the moment you start falling behind. At Excello, we are always asking: What can we do better? What can we change? How can we serve our lawyers and clients more effectively?
- Flexibility and Change Drive Innovation
Excello Law was founded on the belief that the traditional model of law firms no longer worked for the modern world. We wanted to drive change, not just for the sake of it, but for the greater good of our lawyers and their clients. The legal profession has often been resistant to change, but we’ve always challenged that notion. What worked yesterday doesn’t have to be the blueprint for tomorrow. By embracing flexibility, we allow our lawyers to work in a way that suits them and their clients best, while also driving the firm forward.
- Establish a Culture of Learning and Growth
A crucial lesson I’ve learned is the importance of fostering a culture of learning and growth — not just for our lawyers but for our entire team. At Excello, we want everyone to feel that they have learned, trained, and grown during their time with us. We believe that when people leave, they should walk away better than when they arrived. This growth mindset is at the core of who we are, and it’s one of the reasons we have such high retention rates. People want to stay with us because they feel supported and challenged in their professional development. It’s not just about doing the job; it’s about continually evolving, improving, and mastering new skills.
By investing in the growth of every individual within the firm, we build not only better professionals but a stronger, more resilient company. When people feel empowered and equipped to grow, they are more engaged, motivated, and committed to the success of the firm. This is how we’ve created an environment where talent thrives and innovation flourishes.
- Striving for Greatness Never Ends
The final lesson I want to share is this: the pursuit of greatness is a continuous journey. You can never sit back and say, “We’ve made it.” The moment you do, the world will have moved on. Every day, we must push ourselves to innovate, improve, and evolve. At Excello, we believe in constant evolution. We’re always looking for ways to make things better, to grow not just for the sake of growth, but to improve the legal industry as a whole.
Ultimately, the greatest challenge we face as entrepreneurs, as leaders, and as people is to stay open to change. Whether that’s listening more closely to those around us, overcoming our own egos, fostering a culture of growth, or finding new ways to approach old problems, we must keep striving. That’s how we’ve built Excello Law, and it’s how we’ll continue to grow in the future.
