Rory Nelson: Embracing Entrepreneurial Freedom at Excello Law

In 2023, Rory Nelson took a bold step to fulfil his entrepreneurial dreams by becoming a fee share partner at Excello Law, a milestone he describes as ‘the realisation of a long-standing ambition’.
Rory, a specialist in transactional commercial property matters and property finance, has made a significant career move by joining Excello Law in April 2023. With extensive experience representing a diverse range of clients—including purchasers, sellers, landlords, tenants, lending institutions, and borrowers—Rory’s expertise is well-recognised in the legal community. Before his transition to Excello Law, he served as a partner at the prominent Liverpool city centre law firm, Quinn Melville Barrow LLP, where he led the real estate finance and banking department.
Rory’s decision to join Excello Law was driven by his desire to have an entrepreneurial influence in his professional life without the burdensome responsibilities of running a law firm. Reflecting on his motivation, Rory shared, “Running my own law firm was always an ambition of mine right from the outset of my legal career. The reality of regulatory requirements and ever-increasing indemnity insurance premiums make opportunities on this front limited and fraught with risk. Excello offers a platform whereby I am able to have an entrepreneurial feel to my work life without having to worry about the harsh realities and admin associated with running and owning a law firm.”
Since joining Excello, Rory’s professional life has transformed significantly. He notes, “The daily stresses of our line of work still exist, but I find working under the Excello structure more rewarding, and as a result, my motivation to deliver the best possible service to my clients is at an all-time high. As all Excello fee share partners are effectively operating our own business within the Excello platform, there is a real sense of motivation to deliver the best service possible to our clients.”
Transitioning to a new firm naturally comes with its challenges. Rory candidly discusses his initial concerns, saying, “New systems to get to grips with and, of course, the fear of the decision to join Excello not being as rewarding as hoped. The new systems are user-friendly and the Team at 360 offer wonderful support in the event either myself or my secretary need assistance with any systems or IT-related issues. In addition, separate accounts/invoicing teams are equally helpful and are there to assist in whatever capacity I need. There really is a great support network across the central team.”
One of the most notable impacts of joining Excello Law has been on Rory’s professional development and growth. He explains, “Excello Law has impacted my professional development and growth as it is a new approach to the way I operate and view client relationships. I’ve always understood and appreciated the importance of providing high service levels to clients, but under the Excello model, there is a real tangible benefit to developing relationships and trust with clients.”
Rory’s journey serves as an inspiring example for other lawyers contemplating a similar move. He advises, “My advice to other lawyers considering a move from a traditional firm to a platform like Excello Law is that the platform is not a lonely place. The support team are able to assist with all kinds of administrative matters and there is an ever-expanding network of consultants that seek to refer and share work across the platform.”
Through his experience at Excello Law, Rory Nelson has found a professional environment that aligns with his entrepreneurial spirit, allowing him to focus on what he does best: delivering exceptional service to his clients.
“Excello Law stands firmly upon our values of excellence and integrity. Our commitment to excellence means we recruit only the best people.”
“It’s the best decision I’ve ever made. I only wish I had done it sooner”
“Excello offered invaluable guidance and support, managing the regulatory, administrative, and managerial aspects of launching and running a legal practice.”
“Excello Law understood my needs and aspirations: they gave me the freedom to build my practice my way.”
