The Meteoric Rise of Ionic Legal: How Two Legal Entrepreneurs Built a Thriving Firm

How Two Legal Entrepreneurs Built a Thriving Firm on Their Own Terms

Paul Cox and Roy Crozier, highly-experienced lawyers with a combined 50 years of experience, were the driving forces behind the creation of Ionic Legal, a boutique IP law firm. Formerly Directors of the Intellectual Property practices at a number of national law firms at, both had grown disillusioned with the traditional UK law firm model.

Paul explained, “Law firms, with their large corporate structures, can sometimes make it challenging for entrepreneurial lawyers to fully express their innovative ideas. We wanted to move away from that and build something entirely client focused. We noted that across Europe many of our intellectual property colleagues shared this desire and had already established practices to reflect this.” Roy shared this vision, seeking a practice where clients, employees, and partners alike could thrive without the constraints of internal politics or rigid hierarchies.

Their goal was clear: to develop a law firm that prioritised client relationships and excellence in client service. Recognising that traditional structures can sometimes face challenges in adapting to change, Paul and Roy sought to explore how a modern law firm could operate more effectively and embrace innovation

Launching Ionic Legal

Paul and Roy co-founded Ionic Legal in partnership with Excello Law, a UK-based network known for supporting entrepreneurial lawyers. Excello’s incubator programme offered a comprehensive setup support, covering everything from administrative tasks to branding, marketing, and staffing.

“We set up Ionic Legal in a very short space of time,” Roy recalled. “We were able to do so as Excello handled the file transfer, office setup, and HR , allowing us to focus entirely on client work. This gave us the freedom to hit the ground running. Our clients which are mainly well-known companies were very supportive which I believe reflects the relationship we have with them.”

Starting with an initial team of 10, including six former colleagues from Foot Anstey, Ionic Legal quickly established a presence with offices in Manchester and London. Excello’s support empowered the duo to focus on building their client base and ensuring their firm reflected the ethos of client-first service.

Rapid Growth and Unparalleled Freedom

Within months of its launch, Ionic Legal experienced rapid growth, surpassing its initial projections. Major clients, drawn by the firm’s expertise and personal approach, followed Paul and Roy to the new firm. Additionally, talented employees—including a partner, a managing associate, solicitor, and three paralegals—joined the team, contributing to its success.

“The freedom we now have is transformational,” Paul said. “We’re able to run the business exactly how we want, make quick decisions, and focus entirely on our clients and colleagues.”

This newfound autonomy not only facilitated innovation but also created a workplace culture where employees felt valued and motivated. Paul described the firm’s culture as dynamic and supportive, an environment where both employees and clients could thrive.

Success Through Innovation and Client Focus

One of the hallmarks of Ionic Legal’s success is its ability to adapt swiftly to client needs. Unlike traditional firms, which often struggle with slow, hierarchical decision-making, Paul and Roy’s agile approach allows them to implement changes and innovations efficiently.

“We’re closer to our clients now than ever before,” Roy explained. “This understanding allows us to deliver tailored, practical solutions that make a real difference to their businesses.”

Ionic Legal’s innovative approach has resonated with both clients and colleagues, making it a standout in the competitive legal landscape.

A Lesson in Entrepreneurship

In just three months, Paul and Roy have achieved meteoric success, securing recognition as a Chambers UK and Legal 500-listed law firm, earning individual accolades, expanding their team further, and celebrating significant client wins.

Paul and Roy’s journey serves as an inspiration for lawyers considering a leap into entrepreneurship. “Since starting our firm, countless lawyers have told me they wish they had the confidence to do the same,” Paul shared. “If you’re unhappy in a traditional structure, don’t be afraid to explore new paths. The rewards—autonomy, stronger client relationships, and greater professional satisfaction—are worth it.”

Drawing inspiration from entrepreneurial figures like Duncan Bannatyne, Paul’s message is clear: fortune favours the bold and success comes to those willing to take risks and embrace new opportunities.

A Model for Modern Legal Practice

The story of Ionic Legal is one of bold vision, rapid execution, and client-first principles. By breaking away from the confines of traditional law firms, Paul Cox and Roy Crozier have created a thriving business that prioritises relationships, innovation, and freedom.

For lawyers seeking an alternative career path, their success demonstrates what’s possible with the right mindset and support. As Paul put it, “Sometimes, all it takes is the confidence to take that leap.”
